Psychosexual evaluations are assessments that focus on an individual’s sexual development, sexual history, paraphilic interests, sexual adjustment, risk level, and victimology. Some components include objective measures such as sexual interest tests or other psychological testing. It also includes a full social history, familial history, employment/school history, case formulation, and specific treatment recommendations. The assessment greatly assists attorneys and courts (prior to sentencing for adults), foster care, and social service agencies that work with adults who have engaged in illegal or dangerous sexual behavior, sexually reactive children, or adolescents who have engaged in problem sexual behavior.
Prior to the assessment, our office will need the following documents:
The Abel Assessment for sexual interest-3 (AASI-3) is an empirically validated, comprehensive psychosexual evaluation and treatment system that clinicians can add to their existing psychological assessments. The AASI-3 can be used with adult men and women with sexual behavior problems. It is specifically designed to measure sexual interest and to obtain information regarding involvement in a number of abusive or problematic sexual behaviors.
The Abel Assessment for sexual interest-2 (AASI-2) is a complex psychosexual assessment used by clinicians to evaluate adolescents and teens with sexual behavior problems, including juvenile sex offenders. It is specifically designed for use with boys and girls ages 12-17 to objectively measure their sexual interests and obtain information regarding involvement in a number of abusive or problematic sexual behaviors. The AASI-2 provides the clinician with baseline data, treatment planning guidance, and evaluation of the adolescent or teen’s progress as he or she goes through the treatment process. Because different sections of the assessment system work together, the AASI-2 is a system of evaluation tools that allow the therapist to quickly receive a range of valuable information organized in one detailed report.
The Abel–Blasingame Assessment System for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ABID) is like the AASI-3, but uniquely adapted for clinicians to use with clients who have special needs. The ABID contains an objective measure of sexual interest and questionnaire components but is specifically designed for use with adults and adolescents with FSIQs of 60 and above. The ABID is a comprehensive
psychosexual assessment system that may be used with individuals who have learning and/or developmental disabilities. The ABID Questionnaire, written on a 2nd-grade reading level, is read aloud by the evaluator and is administered as a semi-structured interview. Questions with concrete
visual aids assist the therapist in determining the patient's level of understanding of age, body parts, and sexuality.
Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) is a psychological assessment that provides clinical insights into a patient's personality. This assessment covers each of the personality disorders included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), and several additional personality patterns. MCMI is used for diagnostic screening and clinical assessment of adults who indicate problematic emotional and interpersonal symptoms or who are undergoing professional psychotherapy or a psycho-diagnostic evaluation. This assessment was developed for use with adults, age 18 or older, who are seeking mental health treatment and who have at least a fifth-grade -reading level.
The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) is a projective psychological assessment where individuals are presented with a series of ambiguous pictures and asked to create stories about what is happening in the images, allowing the examiner to evaluate their emotional responses and inner thoughts by analyzing their interpretations of the scenes. The TAT is different from the Rorschach Inkblot Test in that the Rorschach uses symmetrical inkblot images rather than a detailed scene with characters and locations. The Rorschach also asks the person to only explain what they see in the image, not to give the image an entire story.
